Medium / Discipline:
This work is part of a small series documenting gender-diverse bodies outside of the typical comparison photo. Participants in this series chose a favourite body part to be photographed and displayed alongside similar portraits of transgender or non-binary South Australians. Transgender bodies are often documented by focusing solely on physical changes through hormones or surgery, this can leave those opting to transition without surgery or hormones feel isolated or “not trans enough”. I wanted to steer away from this by allowing participants to choose any part of their body, shot in a way that feels empowering and self-affirming for them, as well as showing viewers of the project that there is no wrong way to be trans.
Artist Name / Alias:
A transgender 20-something, hospitality worker, musician, design student and photographer of predominantly live music and portraiture, based, born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. My work aims to bring a feeling of bewilderment for the natural and manmade world around us, our own body and its remarkable capacity for change and adaptation, and even sometimes a feeling of smallness and isolation.
